Intensity and hard work are like the red headed stop child no one wants to explain…

They’re not exactly the most popular topics in town…

Instead, you hear about cutting edge ‘engineered’ supplements. They’re wrapped in slick packaging and promise massive gains in size and strength…

You also hear about ’super scientific’ workouts, designed to maximize your genetic potential. They keep your body guessing, and as a result, kick the growth mechanism into super duper over drive…

Yeah right…

Even if all of this fluff has some stuff to it, you still need the critical ingredient to get any results… You guessed it, intense and dedicated hard wok…

But what exactly does ‘intense and dedicated hard work’ mean? What does it look like?

Before I get to that part, it’s important to point out that going all out all of the time isn’t always the right thing to do.

OK, back to the topic at hand…

Below I’ve included a story as told by Ellington Darden about Arthur Jones and Casey Viator,

On one particular day, Casey was doing a set of squats on a Nautilus machine known as the ‘Duo Squat’ machine.

The goal was 20 reps with each leg, which was what Viator was expected to get before failing. That all changed when Arthur walked into the room…

I’ll let Ellington tell the rest…

‘I remember one day, we had Casey on the duo-squat machine and our goal was 20 reps with each leg, which would be more than he’d ever done with us training him. He was at rep 15 and Arthur walked into the gym with a couple of people. “Twenty reps,” Arthur repeated, after asking us about his progress, “hell, he can do 50 with each leg.” Over the next three minutes, Viator not only did 50 reps, but 2 more for good measure. With Flanagan and me pushing him, he’d have stopped at 20.’

This happened in 1978. In 1971 Casey won the Mr. America Bodybuilding Title at the age of 19. (He’s still the youngest person to have ever won the title.)

That means that Casey was an experienced lifter at the time of the story. But even with this being the case, he still had plenty more in the tank than he thought he had ….

.So, if a grizzled vet who’s used to pushing himself hard can still find untapped potential, what does that say about a raw beginner? What about an intermediate level lifter.

What it proves is that we can we can work a heck of a lot harder than we think. We can take our intensity to a whole new level if we want…

It all starts with our mind…

And the first step is redefining our perception of what intense and hard work really is….

After that, all that’s left is to go out and EARN IT!
