Pumping and Humping

The ever popular ‘Pump.’

Ever since we were told the two best things for the heart are ‘pumping and humping,’ Bodybuilders are forever pursuing it.

Now we have legions of ‘pumpers’ engorging every limb, muscle and member with set after set.

But like so many other instances, things have been taken too far. There really can be too much of a good thing.

John C. Grimek, arguably one of the greatest bodybuilders of the Golden Era, if not all time, had a few opinions on ‘the pump.’

And when John speaks, I listen

He wasn’t just a pretty boy, Nope; John was a tough and rugged all round lifter. He excelled at Olympic lifting, and had the numbers to show it.

600 lbs + squats…

270 lbs one hand cleans…

Supporting over 800 lbs overhead…

1000+ bodyweight squats…

Like I said, one of the greatest, if not the greatest.

Here’s what Grimek had to say about the pump…

‘Work the muscle until it is fully congested (pumped) then throw in maybe no more than one more set for good measure. Anything over that will be total overtraining and you will lose instead of making gains.’

No, there isn’t anything mentioned about humping. But I got a hunch he agrees with the advice up top.

As for the pumping part, I’d take his advice to heart…

If you do, you’ll know what to say the next time someone suggests a 20 set biceps routine.
