A couple days back I mentioned a notion that conjures up fear in the heart of our collective society.
They also bring about the clouds of doom and gloom, and not to mention boredom.
These two words are ‘Hard Work.’
And the instant I hit the ‘Send button,’ I know I’d get a mixed bag of responses.
Some agree wholeheartedly, thanking me for being honest and upfront about things. Others found comfort in knowing there’s more to training success than some wonder routine or miracle supplement.
But then there were the responses I knew I’d get…people who rejected the notion of Hard Work altogether.
There are multiple reasons for this, and I’ll cover a few.
One has to do with denial. This is a biggie. Some don’t want to accept that their fate lies in their own hands, and not in the pages of some muscle comic, training book, or in the contents of some bottle.
Another reason has to do with sheer laziness. It’s said it’s human nature to do more to avoid pain, than experience pleasure. And to some, merely reading the words ‘hard work’ causes their muscles to ache.
Another has to do with social conditioning. When was the last time you saw a hard working person who loved his work; and eagerly put in extra hours portrayed as being the ‘cool guy?’ – Almost never.
In fact, the person I described above is usually a nerd, a party pooper, some old fart, a bad guy, some boring introvert with the social skills of a stump, or some wacko genius with weird hair and an even weirder wardrobe. But rarely, if ever, is it the cool guy.
And since many have a little ‘monkey see, monkey do’ in them, pop culture has brainwashed society into avoiding hard work like bad breath.
But if we honestly think about it, we all know effort is a big part of getting what you want.
I’ll touch on this more in the future.
But for now, I promise that thinking otherwise will only lead to failure after failure. The sooner you ditch the mindset of ‘instant and effortless muscles’ that’s promised by miracle routines and supplements, and instead accept work, and potentially hard work, with arms wide open, the faster you’ll reach your goals.
As always…
