I’ve been digging into John Grimek’s training philosophy over the past few weeks.
Here it is again in case you missed it…
‘always keep your focus on good health as the primary motivation for your toil, and build muscle the old fashioned way — earn it by hard work and dedication.’
This time I want to highlight the following words, ‘toil’ and ‘hard work.’
When was the last time you heard someone describe training as ‘toil? I can’t say I have. But serious training IS toil. It’s hard work too. But you won’t hear it described as that
And why not?
Because the mainstream isn’t interested in either of these words. ‘Toil’ brings up images of blue collar work. It describes the kind of jobs farmers, ditch diggers, and steelworkers do. Demanding, rugged, and dirty work.
Today’s society isn’t into that. It’s gone ‘Hollywood.’ And the last thing it wants to do is something that might lead to calluses.
Those selling health and fitness figured this out a while ago. ‘Toil’ and ‘Hard Work’ aren’t exactly hot sellers.
No, they’re not…
But ‘truth’ isn’t about a popularity contest. If anything, the lack oft this subject’s popularity is probably what caused Grimek to point it out. It’s like he was reminding us of the truth – You have to give, and then receive the might and muscle you desire. That’s how you EARN it.
And super strength and conditioning is paid for with plenty of toil and hard work. There’s just no way around it.
The sooner someone stops wasting time looking for shortcuts and magical solutions, and instead gets to ‘paying up,’ the faster he’ll get the results he wants.
And like most truths, this applies in and out of the gym.

PS: Hard work and toil need to be fueled with plenty of quality nutrition. Otherwise you won’t be getting the most from your time and effort.
