How Do You Judge Yourself?

It seems that everyone is busy comparing themselves to someone else nowadays.

People compare looks, cars, income, houses, children, pets, and even ride on lawnmowers.

And if there’s one place you’re guaranteed to find this type of comparison and ‘one upmanship,’ it’s in the gym.

Don’t think this is limited to the ‘big boys’ lumbering around the weights.

Many times newbies fall into the trap of comparing themselves to others…and this is a recipe for frustration and failure.

If you look up to a guy who’s light years ahead of you, inadequacies can slither their way into your mind.

If everyone around you is 10 times stronger than you, you might feel inferior and eventually feel ‘bad’ about yourself. Before you know it, you subconsciously start to sabotage your training.

Another point to keep to keep in mind, the person you’re looking up to may only be performing at a fraction of his true potential, or worse, a fraction of what your true potential is.

That means you may never push yourself to the point of actualizing what you’re capable of.

For example, if the ‘strongest guy’ in you gym can only squat 3 plates, and they’re the only one you look to for inspiration, it’s likely you won’t lift more than that.

If no one you look up to has gained more than 10 pounds of muscle in 3 months, and that’s all they think is possible, it’s unlikely you’ll put on 30 in that same period of time. (Yes, packing on 30 pounds in 12 short weeks is possible for some)

As you can see, things can get complicated when you try to compare yourself to others. That’s why I suggest keeping your focus on YOU and your progress.

Do this, and strive to continually better your personal bests. This attitude will lead to phenomenal gains in a relatively quick period of time.

It’ll also develop a deep sense of satisfaction. And that feeling is crucial for long term gains.
